For my money Stella Blue is the finest composition in the Hunter/Garcia catalog.A true American standard in the tradition of Blue Skies,Stormy Weather and Skylark.Hunter's delivers some some stark, evocative lyrics over Garcia's delicate and beautiful melodic musical bed.I have never heard a another ballad that even resembles this songs unique structure.

Here are few spread out over the years.

"This Robert Hunter / Jerry Garcia song seems to me to constitute the apex of their joint songwriting partnership."

David Dodd agrees.

Judging by what I just read I could live without being in agreement with this fellow. He seems to wildly over analyzing something that requires little to no analyzing as it is Stella Blue and not Desolation Row,but to each his own I guess.

Hey JL; I won't explain how I almost went off on this...I am such an old cranker...I feel, no offense to your love of the tune, that it's a pretty simple storyline, and a bit similar to prior efforts (I hate when a singular line is used more than once; eg, "that's ever been", from Blk Peter, works so much better in that tune than it does here...a "day that's like ever day that's ever been" is much more evocative than the "every lonely street that's ever been", IMHO).

But, I don't want to rain on your love of SB (my closest fellow head always picked this as his fav), just to note that I had the same reaction to reading the link VM posted regarding the "meaning" and significance of SB, etc., that you did...

You made two good points straight away WT.I am also not a fan of using a line more than once and SB is similar to some earlier pieces.I have to say that I find Hunter to be a better line writer than story teller in that there will be a few lines in a song that appeal to me,but the overall import of the lyrics usually leave me wanting. The straight forward simpleness of SB'S lyrics is one of it's strengths for me.

I went on to read a few pieces that the gentleman VB quoted wrote and I find his take on things to be utterly ridiculous.

Glad to see 10-21-78 in the mix. Truly a stellar Stella, and the preceding Other One is unlike any other one. Just listen to the whole show (or 10-78 Winterland run).

High praise from you. It is the first song I think of for a Jerry ballad or a blues song. Bluetiful.
Thanks for your notes. I will copy and save.
The early ones are stark in their beauty, no frills, unadorned, and Jerry had a nice quiet voice then.

The way these responses line up here sometimes you can't tell what post the response is to VM.I'm taking a shot you were talking to me and as not to be rude and leave you unanswered I will say thanks for the thanks.I too very much enjoy the early versions and would have used the 11-19 version as an example had you not done so.The starkness of them is the appeal.

That was a good list to get this going. I save your lists for future use. There was one a while back about songs from 70 and 71 that was gone too soon. Maybe you will post it again.
I agree Dodd was off on his comments which is a little surprising. I have found his Annotated Lyrics a good reference tool and links or for when I hear "all the cards are dealt" instead of "all the cards are down." Then, it sounds clear. I am always amazed when I learn the real words how easy they are to understand as opposed to when I made it up.

I had some glitches with the sources for some of the songs on that '70-'71 post so I just deleted it.I'll re-post it somewhere down the line.As for Mr. Dodd I think his annotated lyrics site is the go to place for the correct words, but I find his analysis of the lyrics on dead.net to be pure horse shit.Let me say I have a very limited sampling of his opinions.

10-21-78 is tops for me due to the intensity and passion of the guitar solo.

In the last few years, Jerry's vocals on Stella got so emotive even as his voice got rougher and the guitar and keyboard sounds got more unpleasing to my ears. But this version from Phoenix in 1994 is killer to hear Jerry sing the hell out of!

https://archive.org/details/gd94-03-05.sbd.kidder.8331.sbeok.shnf/GD94-03-05d2t6.shn

I also really like 7-13-84 Greek for the vibe, even if the solo is short and the vocals are rough, it has a feel that to me is just right for the song and I'll take Brent's backing vocals anyday over anybody else's. https://archive.org/details/gd1984-07-13.sbd.walker-scotton.miller.96153.sbeok.flac16/gd84-07-13d1t01.flac

And if you haven't listened to it in awhile, check out the studio version, its damn fine and to my ears one of their better studio performances ever. I agree its a fantastic song, probably my fave Hunter Garcia ballad, too, with close competition from Comes A Time and High Time, for me.

Thanks Jerlouvis. Totally agree. Been listening to a lot of Ella lately. Did you know that two of the greatest blues songs ever were written by a NYC Jew? Who knew? :)

Stormy Weather - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezGHapF8-lY

I am a true lover of the American standard song book DH,so I am very familiar with all the authors of those classic compositions.I've got 35 years or so of never going more than a few days without some Ella,Billie,Sara,Anita O'Day and so on. I spend a lot of time listening to the female jazz vocalists from the '30's-'60's and the female pop vocalists from the '50's-'70's.Artists like Sinead O'Connor,Linda Rondstadt and Natalie Cole also have impressive catalogs of great standard recordings. Then you throw in "pop" vocalists like Karen Carpenter,Dusty Springfield,Nina Simone,Patsy Cline,Laura Nyro and Annie Lennox who all having stunningly beautiful voices and you have one hell of a listening pool. And that's not to mention a ton of other women with a smaller output or legacy.

Well that reply got away from me.Point being I think we share an interest in similar music from the past if I correctly gauge responses of yours from older threads here on the forum.

Good post and clips.
Does that leave Hoagy Carmichael as a the non NYC Jewish guy? Voice like syrup. I remember him from To Have and Have Not as Cricket and Johhny Angel as the cabdriver, Celestial.
"Tin Pan Alley legend who began composing for films in 1936 and won an Academy Award for "In the Cool Cool Cool of the Evening" in 1951. As an actor he usually played himself, sitting at a piano, smoking a cigarette and singing a song."

Or I could be all wrong, most likely.

Hoagy Carmichael was very hip. The other was Harold Arlen. And I just looked this up - born Hyman Arluck. He wrote a bunch of great stuff with Johnny Mercer, another of my faves.

I think Mercer was a founder of Capitol Records.
Here is some stuff on Harold Arlen you probably know already.
Prolific. Like they said about the Catholics.

Hi all, thanks for your suggestions.Jerlouvis, thanks for so many suggestions, and I agree with your lofty praise of the song. I think the song is so well crafted, and the good live versions ( esp. Jerry's solo ) always give me that 'spine tingling' feeling, that few others ever did, even to this day.

Thanks for starting an interesting thread.Making suggestions is the fun part. After all the back and forth is the backbone of this joint. For me the highlight of Stella was always the vocal and the wonderful, lilting melody of the song.A good solo was a bonus,I just always hoped Weir,Donna or Brent wouldn't ruin it.

This one as mentioned by jerlouvis gets my vote - Jerry's voice and guitar work are simply stunning - https://archive.org/details/gd1978-10-21.sbd.miller.89721.sbeok.flac16/gd78-10-21d1t01.flac
